A comedy about magicians has the potential to be massively tacky, but
this film manages to depict magic without an ounce of cheese.
The Incredible
Burt Wonderstone is about a famous magician (Steve Carell) who lets
success go to his head and as a result, drives his performance partner and
childhood friend Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) away.
The duo fall apart after their staple act turns dull and overdone, and
their downfall is made increasingly worse when daredevil street magician Steve
Gray (Jim Carrey) arrives on the scene to steal the limelight.
Burt must salvage his career and his friendship – but to do so he must
come up with fresh ideas for a riveting performance to captivate a large
audience. This isn’t easy as he has to contend with the seemingly unstoppable
Steve and his boisterous and shocking stunts.
It is slightly predictable in part – Burt changing his ways and getting
the girl...well, that wasn’t difficult to see coming!
Additionally, it could have been enhanced by more heart-warming moments –
as the kids were such good friends at the start, it would have been nice for
them to have shown the strength of this friendship to a greater degree
throughout, particularly when the duo reunited.
However, it did make me chuckle, and it has some pretty cool magic
tricks, slight elements of violence and
romance, so it makes for a varied and interesting watch.
Conclusion: On the whole,
a pretty decent flick. Entertaining and quirky, but an emphasis on the
rekindling of their friendship would have made for more uplifting viewing. In
honesty, I think Jim Carrey makes this film, with his craziness and carefree
attitude. He even manages to pull off long blonde locks!
